Favorite Wedding Cakes

As a wedding planner I get to try a whole lot of wedding cake! Not going to lie, it’s one of the best perks of the job. This week I’ve been working with a few clients to get their wedding cakes planned and booked, and it’s prompted me to look back at some past favorites for inspiration. So, since Valentine’s Day always involves sugar and sweets, I thought I’d share some on the blog today!

SIMPLE TEXTURED CAKES

By far the most popular type of wedding cake these days, a simple textured cake fits right in with whatever style you’ve chosen for your wedding day. Your baker can create a smooth “lined” or “fluted” look, or you can go for a “rustic” or “wispy” look. Maybe you want to add some “beads” at the bottom of each tier. Once you decide on your texture, you can dress it up with a floral cascade or pops of fruit to add color. It’s easy, versatile, and beautiful!

CLASSIC AND TRADITIONAL CAKES

If your wedding has a classic style, you might keep it clean and smooth with one or two fun details (such as adding your wedding logo or an initial). If you want something more intricate, you could ask for a lace texture in the icing or add some sugar flowers. Fun fact: Marie’s baker modeled the lace texture on her cake after the lace of her wedding dress (pictured below). So special!

FUN, FRESH, AND UNIQUE CAKES

I always love when a couple puts a little extra thought into their cake, and comes up with something completely unique to their wedding style. For a wedding this past June, we were going for an al-fresco feel in the courtyard at the Parlour at Manns Chapel, and Randi at Sugar Euphoria created a cake with a texture that mimicked the look of Italian stucco. It turned out so beautifully (pictured below on the left)! Another client of mine wanted to incorporate the look of Spanish tiles into the wedding cake, and it remains one of my favorite cake designs years later (pictured below to the right).

NAKED CAKES

Last but not least, one of the cake trends of the past few years has been naked cakes. If you are one of those people who doesn’t like too much icing, this is the cake for you!
